Project: Regional Road 8 (SR 8) – Taranto–Avetrana Internal Coastal Corridor
Work continues on the Internal Coastal Road Taranto–Avetrana, part of the wider Regional Road 8 (SR 8), a strategic infrastructure designed to improve mobility and economic development across the province of Taranto. The project is currently advancing on the segment connecting Talsano/San Donato with the Avetrana/Nardò area.
All works are supervised by a Joint Venture led by IRD Engineering, responsible for both the works supervision and the role of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Coordinator during execution, ensuring high-quality technical oversight and compliance with regulatory and performance standards.
The overall intervention extends for approximately 80 kilometers, divided into two major lots, with a total estimated value of €270 million. Of this amount, €122 million has already been allocated to support ongoing activities and guarantee consistent progress on this essential regional corridor.
The infrastructure is designed to deliver multiple strategic benefits:
- Economic development: improved logistics and accessibility for the eastern part of the province, supporting local businesses and production areas.
- Traffic reduction: the creation of an internal coastal route offers an alternative to existing shoreline roads, improving travel times and enhancing road safety for residents and tourists.
- Stronger territorial connectivity: a direct and efficient link between the urban area of Taranto and the Salento region, strengthening connections toward Avetrana and Nardò.
The works include the realignment and widening of existing road sections, construction of new roadway segments, creation of junctions with secondary routes, minor bridges, and systems for water collection and lamination. Soil improvement and stabilization treatments are also planned to ensure long-term safety and structural resilience.
This project represents an important step toward modern, sustainable, and efficient mobility, serving the needs of citizens, businesses, and the growing tourist flow along the Ionian coast and throughout Salento.
