We are pleased to announce the signing of a new contract for the Supervision of the Deployment (Installation and Integration) of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) on Highway A1, Corridor X in North Macedonia, from the Tabanovce border crossing (Serbia) to the Bogorodica border crossing (Greece).
IRD Engineering, as part of an international consortium, will support the Ministry of Transport of the Republic of North Macedonia in delivering modern ITS along approximately 172 km of this strategic Pan-European corridor. The project is financed by The World Bank Group under the Western Balkans Trade and Transport Facilitation Project (WBTTFP).
Under this assignment, the supervision team will act as the “Engineer” under the World Bank Conditions of Contract for Supply and Installation and will provide:
- Supervision of ITS installation, integration, testing and commissioning;
- Administration and supervision of the ITS implementation contract;
- Quality control and verification of materials, equipment and workmanship;
- Monitoring of compliance with technical, environmental and social, and health & safety requirements;
- Support during testing, commissioning and final system acceptance.
The project aims to improve road safety, traffic management and travel reliability by continuously monitoring traffic and road conditions, detecting incidents quickly, and giving road users real-time information.
The works cover the supply, installation, integration, testing and commissioning of:
- Variable and dynamic message signs (VMS/DMS);
- Automatic weather stations;
- CCTV and automatic incident video detection systems;
- Local traffic stations, fibre-optic communications and power infrastructure;
- Two Traffic Control Centres.
Our team of international and local experts will work closely with the Ministry of Transport, the Public Enterprise for State Roads of the Republic of North Macedonia (PESR) and other stakeholders to ensure high-quality delivery, compliance with all standards, and smooth, efficient completion of this strategically important transport infrastructure project.

IRD Engineering has worked in North Macedonia since 2002 and has completed more than 50 contracts in the country. Our work on Corridor X includes supervising the Demir Kapija–Smokvica motorway section, completed in 2018. We are currently supervising the construction of four motorways totalling 108 km on Corridors VIII and X-d, a 34 km railway section, and the Skopje Wastewater Treatment Plant. IRD holds a national licence for design and supervision in the country.
