The road network in the Republic of Moldova has more than 5,800 km of National Roads, where 50% are in poor condition and in need of rehabilitation. In order to alleviate this situation, the Government sought assistance from multilateral development organisations, including the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), towards the cost of the Moldova Roads Sector Program, aimed at investing in the modernization of transport and road infrastructure.

In this context, representatives from IRD Engineering and the Moldovan State Roads Administration have recently signed a new contract for the provision of engineering services during the rehabilitation of the road R33 Section Hincesti-Lapusna-M1.

This 37-km-long road is located in the centre-western part of the country, representing an important link that connects Hincesti with neighbouring minor centres to the Leuseni-Albita customs terminal on the Romanian border, through the national road M1 (or European E581).

Such particular geographical location makes this road one the most strategic links for the transport of passengers and freight, both at international and national levels. The Leuseni-Albita is in fact the custom terminal with the highest volume of freight in the country.

A team of international and local engineers from IRD Engineering will carry out the duties of “the Engineer” according to FIDIC Conditions of Contract (MDB Harmonised Edition 2010), including the management of any variations and claims occurring during the implementation of the project.

IRD Engineering is present in the Moldova since 2011, where it operates through a branch office staffed with civil engineers, project managers, and other qualified professionals. The company is currently implementing several important infrastructure contracts financed by the EBRD and other relevant financing institutions.

Moldova applied for EU membership in March 2022 and was granted the EU Candidate Status in June 2022. In December 2023, EU leaders decided to open accession negotiations.

We look forward to welcoming Moldova as a full member of the European Union family.
