IRD Engineering is present in Uzbekistan since the year 2020, when the company signed its first contract in the country, a World Bank-funded technical assistance project for the preparation of a sustainable program for regional road asset management, the modernization of road surveys technology, and the implementation of an overall capacity development package in road management and maintenance activities.
Nowadays, three years later, our teams are also providing FIDIC supervision services during the reconstruction and upgrade of a 240 kilometers cement concrete pavement section of the A-380 “Guzar-Bukhara-Nukus-Beyneu” road (ADB-funded) and during the rehabilitation of 26 road sections with a total length of 202 kilometers in the Tashkent region (WB-funded).
It has been only now, in December 2023, that the company has sign its first contract in the water and irrigation sectors, the “Project Implementation Support for the Modernization of 118 Pumping Stations in Andizhan, Fergana and Namangan Regions”, a project promoted by the Ministry of Water Resources.
The assignment is financed by the EBRD through a 200 million USD loan aimed at enhancing the efficiency of the regional irrigation water conveyancing systems, crucial for regions dependent on irrigated agriculture and characterized for the relatively low levels of rainfall throughout the year. More specifically, the loan targets the supply and installation of pump units and auxiliary equipment and the reconstruction of related buildings and external networks. The aim is not only to improve the efficiency of water use, but also to increase the surface of irrigated area, with the potential to stimulate economic growth and employment opportunities in Uzbekistan’s most densely populated regions.
The new contract will be implemented by a Joint Venture led by IRD Engineering, with the participation of SWECO and IKS Consulting. During the next 50 months a team of specialists from the Joint Venture will offer a wide range of project implementation support services to the Centre for Implementation of Foreign Investment Projects in the Water Sector under the Ministry of Water Resources, focusing on the provision of assistance to the Project Implementation Unit on organizational matters, procurement, tendering and contract implementation, compliance and reporting obligations, as well as on the environmental and social safeguards in accordance with EBRD’s Procurement Policies and Rules.
IRD Engineering provide a wide variety of environmental services always applying a multidisciplinary and holistic approach. Our experience in water supply, sewage disposal, and treatment facilities goes back to the company’s early days and our services cover from the planning and design to the management and supervision of works in interventions to supply drinking water both in urban and rural areas. Similarly, in sanitation, IRD Engineering plans and designs sewerage systems and treatment plants as well as supervises and controls their construction. In addition, we provide technical assistance and train staff from water utilities and other beneficiary institutions on various aspects related to the management of their assets and capital investments.
