Supervision and Technical Assistance Services for the Extension of the Aids to Navigation System in the Sava River

The navigational conditions on the Danube River and its tributary the Sava River are constantly changing due to different meteorological conditions, fluctuating water levels, variations in the river bed morphology, or by different obstacles appearing in the waterway. To enable their navigation, waterways are marked with “AtoNs” (Aids to Navigation), a marking system consisting of different elements with different colors, shapes, numbers and light characteristics to mark navigable channels, waterways and obstructions.

The Serbian authorities have already undertaken steps to increase the capacity and safety of navigation with the development and installation of an “AtoNs” system on the Danube River. This system, implemented and financed within the EU-funded Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance during the period 2017-2019, relies on the River Information Systems infrastructure.

As a further step beyond the existing system on the Danube River, the Serbian authorities are now seeking to improve the navigational conditions on its tributaries, i.e. the Sava River, in order to cover the most important waterways in the country with “AIS AtoNs” (Automatic Identification System – Aids to Navigation) technology.

In this context, IRD Engineering is providing engineering services as the Supervision Contractor, offering all kinds of support to the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure of the Republic of Serbia and, more specifically, to the Directorate for Inland Waterways (Plovput), during the implementation of two contracts required for the extension and upgrade of the Monitoring and Reaction System to the Sava River.
