At IRD Engineering, we are proud to support the implementation of the Água Grande Coastal Protection and Marginal Road Reconstruction Project in the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe. As of February 2026, the project had reached approximately 84% overall physical progress. Lot 2 – Ana Chaves Bay stands at 74% completion, while Lot 3 – Pantufo Coastline has reached 93%, confirming substantial and steady progress across both sections of this strategic coastal corridor.
A joint venture composed of IRD Engineering and Nippon Koei Mozambique signed this contract in 2023 to provide FIDIC supervision services for the construction of the Água Grande coastal protection works and the reconstruction of the Marginal Road, covering a total length of 8.8 km. The entire scheme is financed by the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO).
This ambitious intervention involves the reconstruction, upgrading, and coastal protection of São Tomé City’s main avenue, the Marginal—one of the most important arteries of the national primary road network and a central element in the capital’s urban regeneration and tourism development. The works will undoubtedly enhance climate resilience, road safety, and connectivity across this beautiful island in the Gulf of Guinea.
Alongside construction progress, the project continues to promote social and environmental initiatives, including community engagement activities, environmental awareness actions with schools, and support for local sustainability projects. A concrete example of how infrastructure development can advance hand in hand with community dialogue and environmental responsibility. For more information about these initiatives:
