The Asian Development Bank (ADB)-supported Coastal Towns Climate Resilience Project (CTCRP) aims at strengthening climate resilience and disaster preparedness in 22 climate vulnerable coastal towns in the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. The project towns were selected based on their vulnerability, population size, density, and level of past investments.

The project takes a holistic and integrated approach to urban development and will provide municipal infrastructure for resilience improvement, will enhance resilient livelihood, and will strengthen institutional capacity, local governance, and knowledge-based public awareness, for risk-informed urban planning and service delivery, all considering climate change and disaster risks. Investments will mostly benefit the poor and women.

Within this ambitious program, a Joint Venture led by IRD Engineering, together with the local companies AQUA Consultant & Associates Ltd, KS Consultants Limited, and Development Project Design and Services Ltd., have just signed a contract with the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives (MLGRDC), acting through its Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), and aimed at the provision of detailed design services for all the foreseen interventions, namely cyclone shelters constructed with early warning system, roads with stormwater drainages, footpath, bridges and culverts rehabilitated or constructed for improved connectivity and access to emergency services in the event of disasters triggered by natural hazard, climate resilient infrastructure for improved urban flood risk management, gender-responsive and socially inclusive urban public spaces, and slum infrastructure improvement programs.

IRD Engineering has recently set up a new branch in Dhaka. The company is already present in the country and is participating in three other important contracts in the transport infrastructure sector.
