Technical study of lbar bridge in Kosovo

The Ibar Bridge, a key structure connecting North and South Mitrovica, has been at the center of attention for over two decades—not only for its engineering characteristics, but also for its broader urban and societal significance. This project looks toward the future, focusing on enhancing safety, connectivity, and long-term sustainability of the bridge and its surrounding area.
The assignment includes a comprehensive technical evaluation of the bridge’s load-bearing capacity, durability, and seismic performance. Detailed field investigations, laboratory testing of materials, and advanced numerical modelling using finite element analysis (FEM) are carried out to identify structural deficiencies and define appropriate rehabilitation, retrofitting, or reactivation measures.
In parallel, an urban study assesses the current urban, infrastructural, and socio-economic conditions in the surrounding area. The objective is to identify key challenges and development opportunities and to provide practical, sustainable recommendations to improve integration, functionality, and connectivity within the wider urban context.
The project is funded under the IPA 2022 Annual Action Programme for Kosovo (IPA III) and is delivered by a multidisciplinary team of local and regional experts in structural engineering, geotechnics, urban planning, and environmental protection.
IRD Engineering’s responsibilities include:
- Structural assessment of the existing bridge
- Material testing and structural analysis using FEM
- Development of rehabilitation and retrofitting solutions
- Preparation of an urban study for the surrounding area
- Identification of development constraints and opportunities
- Proposal of practical recommendations for urban and infrastructure improvement
