Sustainable Urban Transport Investment Program

Tbilisi, Georgia’s capital city, suffers from acute traffic congestions and from air and noise pollution due to an increased private car ownership and to deteriorating public transport systems.

In order to improve this situation, the Asian Development Bank is financing the preparation of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) for Tbilisi’s metropolitan area. The SUMP will assess diverse development scenarios, define investment priorities and provide a clear roadmap for implementation.

IRD Engineering is part of a team that designs strategies to improve the efficiency of the city’s transportation system, namely by:

  • Providing a long-term vision and objectives for urban development;
  • Developing a multimodal transportation model for the metropolitan area;
  • Formulating alternative urban development and investment scenarios;
  • Identifying feasible and cost-effective actions, and providing a clear implementation plan, including timelines, and financial, institutional and policy development needs.
