Issyk-Kul Environmental Management and Sustainable Tourism Development Project

IRD Engineering provides PMC services for a large-scale environmental and tourism development initiative around Lake Issyk-Kul, aimed at improving wastewater management, protecting natural assets, and enhancing sustainable tourism infrastructure. The Project combines substantial investments in climate-resilient municipal services with targeted upgrades to cultural, recreational, and heritage sites, improving both environmental quality and visitor experience.

Key Infrastructure Components

Climate-resilient wastewater systems: construction of a new 14,208 m³/day Wastewater Treatment Plant, 18 pumping stations, 45.4 km of rising mains and collector sewers, and 108.7 km of residential sewerage networks serving commercial and public facilities.

Tourism and environmental infrastructure: development of a museum, a tourism information centre, two unmanned info points, 15 km of promenade/bike/walking paths with universal access, rehabilitation of an archaeological heritage site, redevelopment of three public parks, creation of a protected wetland park, and construction of nine parking areas.

Visitor facilities and utilities: installation of gender-sensitive, inclusive public toilets, solid-waste facilities, upgraded lighting, fencing, utilities connections, and improved accessibility measures across 10 key tourism locations.

Scope of Services

IRD ensures the effective planning and delivery of all project components by reviewing bid packages and supporting tendering, overseeing contracting and construction supervision, and providing project management, financial advisory, and environmental, social, health and safety monitoring. The team also addresses operational risks, tracks project performance, and strengthens institutional capacity through targeted training for PMO and PIO staff, contributing to the protection of the Issyk-Kul ecosystem and the sustainable development of tourism and municipal services in the region.
