An official ceremony has taken place to cut the ribbon for the Bakurtsikhe – Tsnori road in Georgia. The event, which obtained lots of media coverage, was presided by the Prime Minister, Mr. Irakli Kobakhidze, who declared on the occasion: “In the last ten years highway construction has tripled in Georgia, with 232 km of highways built since year 2012. Only in 2024, a total of 90 km of highways will be opened. This is very important for our economic growth and for the improvement in the social standards of our population”.

Alo present in the event were Mr. Irakli Karseladze, Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure, H.E. Mr. Massimiliano D’Antuono, Italian Ambassador, as well as senior representatives of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Roads Department under the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure, and also of IRD Engineering, as “the Engineer”.

“The construction of this new highway was critically necessary because road safety standards were not been ensured. Also next year, the 17 km section Sagarejo – Badiauri will be opened and we can say that road transport will move on a more efficent way along the most critical 52-km section of the Kakheti road”, declared Mr. Karseladze, Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure.

The Bakurtsikhe – Tsnori road section is part of the international route Tbilisi – Bakurtsikhe – Lagodekhi (Azerbaijan Border), which is the main highway connecting Tbilisi and the Kakheti Region and also the transit corridor connecting to Azerbaijan’s north-west region.

In 2021, IRD Engineering (in association with GMC CONSULTING) signed a contract with the Roads Department under the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure for the provision of construction supervision services under FIDIC MDB Harmonized 2010 edition of Conditions of Contract for Construction for Building and Engineering works designed by the Employer (Pink Book), being co-financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).

The overall objective of the assignment was to ensure a high-quality construction and that all works are carried out in full compliance with the engineering design, technical specification described in the civil works contracts, so that the contractor completes the construction within the agreed total price and time schedule.
